Getting started with your Hermes Agent VPS

What you receive when you order Hermes Agent, how to open its panel, change the password and get the agent ready for your AI.

Your Hermes Agent VPS is delivered with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and Hermes Agent, by Nous Research, already installed and its panel served over HTTPS. Hermes is an AI agent with memory and scheduled tasks that you use from the panel, from the terminal or over Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp and other channels.

What you receive

  1. The email with your VPS access details: the IP and the root password, to log in over SSH.
  2. The "Your Hermes Agent is ready" email: the panel address, the username (admin) and the password, with a button to open it.

Hermes is the longest installation of the four applications: the second email may take a little longer than for the others. The same details show in your client area, in your server's "Your application" section. More detail in Where to find your application login details.

First login

  1. Open the address, which looks like https://37-114-51-188.astrolnodes.app (what this address is).
  2. Sign in with the username admin and the password.

Important: the panel grants full control of the agent, including a terminal. Keep these details in a password manager and do not share them.

Change the panel password

The panel password is stored in the Hermes configuration. Log in over SSH as root (how to access your VPS) and open the file:

nano /home/hermes/.hermes/.env

Change the value on the HERMES_DASHBOARD_BASIC_AUTH_PASSWORD= line to your new password, save and restart the panel:

su - hermes -c 'systemctl --user restart hermes-dashboard'

The email and your client panel will keep showing the initial password: only you will know the new one.

How to run Hermes commands

Hermes runs under its own system user, hermes, without administrator rights. There are two ways to use the hermes tool:

  • As root, with hermes-admin in front: hermes-admin gateway status.
  • Switching to the user: su - hermes and then hermes gateway status.

The server does not include any AI key: the agent runs on your account with your provider (Nous Portal, OpenRouter, OpenAI, Anthropic…), and that provider bills you for model usage. Follow Connect Hermes Agent to your AI and to Telegram, Discord or WhatsApp.

Security

The agent runs commands as the hermes user, without sudo. Keep dangerous-command approval enabled and treat anything that arrives through the channels as untrusted. Username and password login is meant for trusted networks: for stronger protection you can restrict panel access by IP or use Nous Research account login (hermes dashboard register).
