Hermes has its own backup command: it saves the agent's memory, skills and settings (the /home/hermes/.hermes folder) into a zip file. Your VPS already has daily server backups; with this command you make your own copies of the agent, which you can restore separately or take to another server.
Important: the backup includes your AI and channel keys. Keep it somewhere safe and do not share it.
Make a backup
Log in over SSH as root and run, as the hermes user:
su - hermes
hermes backup
When it finishes, the command tells you where it saved the file.
Keep backups off the VPS
A backup that only lives on the server itself does not protect you if you reinstall it. Download it to your computer over SFTP (FileZilla, WinSCP) logging in as root, or with scp root@YOUR_IP:FILE_PATH ..
Schedule the backup
You can schedule it with the hermes user's task scheduler. As root:
crontab -u hermes -e
And add, for a daily backup at 04:00:
0 4 * * * hermes backup
If cron cannot find the command, use the full path given by su - hermes -c 'command -v hermes'. Check from time to time that backups are being created and delete old ones.
Restore a backup
Upload the file to the server and, as the hermes user:
su - hermes
hermes import FILE_PATH.zip
systemctl --user restart hermes-dashboard
The panel password does not change when you restore: it stays whatever the server has.
