Your n8n VPS is delivered with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and n8n already installed and served over HTTPS. It is your server: you have root access and the n8n instance is yours.
What you receive
- The email with your VPS access details: the IP and the root password. You use it to log in over SSH; you do not need it to use n8n.
- The "Your n8n is ready" email, a few minutes later: your n8n address, username and password, with a button to open it.
The same details are in your client area: open your server and look for the "Your application" section. While n8n is installing you will see "Installing n8n"; once it finishes, the address, username and password appear (press Show to reveal it). More detail in Where to find your application login details.
First login
The n8n owner account is already created: the installation sets it up before publishing anything, so nobody can take over your n8n before you do.
- Open the address, which looks like
https://37-114-51-188.astrolnodes.app(what this address is). - Sign in with the username (an email like
[email protected]) and the password. - Under Settings → Personal, change that email to yours and set a new password.
Important: the password in the email and in the panel is the initial one. Once you change it inside n8n, only you will know the new one: keep it in a password manager.
What to do on day one
- Two-factor authentication on your user, also under Settings → Personal.
- A copy of the encryption key. n8n encrypts the credentials you store (API keys, passwords for other services) with the
N8N_ENCRYPTION_KEY. Without it they cannot be recovered. To see it, log in over SSH as root (how to access your VPS):
grep N8N_ENCRYPTION_KEY /opt/n8n/.env
- Scheduled backups: n8n does not make them on its own. The commands are in n8n backups.
Webhooks
The URLs shown by each Webhook node already include your HTTPS address: you can use them as they are in external services. If you later move to your own domain, those URLs change.
If it runs short
n8n itself uses little memory. What drives usage up is the number of active workflows, the execution history and nodes that move large files. If it falls short, you can upgrade your plan without reinstalling or losing anything.
More n8n guides
n8n is distributed under the Sustainable Use License: the instance is yours, for your own use. To design your workflows you have the official n8n documentation and its forum. If something on the server is not working, open a ticket.
