Most guides about FiveM hosting compare providers by price and RAM. Both matter, but neither is the specification that decides whether your server holds 48 players at a stable tick rate on a Saturday night. That one is single-thread performance, and almost nobody puts it in the comparison table.

This guide explains what a FiveM server actually asks of a VPS, how much RAM each server size needs, and why the location of the datacenter matters more in FiveM than in most other games.

Why FiveM depends on clock speed, not core count

The FiveM server runtime executes its core simulation dominantly on a single thread. Adding cores does not make that thread faster. A 4-core CPU at 4.5 GHz will generally outperform an 8-core CPU at 2.8 GHz in a FiveM workload, because the bottleneck is how quickly one core can process each tick.

This has a direct consequence when you compare offers. A plan advertising 8 vCores on an older server-grade CPU with a low boost clock will feel worse than a plan with 4 vCores on a modern high-clock desktop CPU. The core count is the number that gets advertised; the clock speed is the number that determines your tick rate.

What the extra cores do give you is headroom for everything running alongside the main thread: the database, txAdmin, resource streaming, and the operating system itself. So cores are not useless. They are simply not what fixes a server that runs at 20 ms of frame time.

When you evaluate a VPS for FiveM, look for the specific CPU model, not a vague "high performance" label. If a provider does not publish which processor runs your instance, that is information you need before paying.

How much RAM a FiveM server actually needs

RAM requirements scale with the number of resources and the framework, not only with the player count. A vanilla server with 32 slots and a handful of scripts behaves very differently from a QBCore roleplay server with hundreds of resources and custom MLOs.

The usual mistake is buying for the player count you hope to have rather than the resource list you actually run. A 64-slot server with 80 resources needs less memory than a 32-slot server with 400. Count your resources before you count your slots.

Storage matters less than people expect, but it has to be NVMe. FiveM streams assets continuously, and a spinning disk or a cheap SATA SSD produces stutter that looks like a network problem and is not.

Why the datacenter location matters more in FiveM than elsewhere

FiveM is a persistent, physics-driven multiplayer environment. Every vehicle, every synchronised entity and every interaction travels between client and server continuously. Latency is not a background detail; players feel it as rubber-banding and desync.

This is why the geography of your audience should decide your datacenter before any specification does. A server in Frankfurt with excellent hardware delivers a worse experience to players in Mexico, Colombia or Brazil than a modest server placed closer to them.

Miami is the relevant location for Latin American and North American communities because it is one of the main landing points for the submarine cables that connect to Latin America. Traffic from most of the region reaches Miami over shorter, better-provisioned paths than it reaches Europe. The exact latency depends on the player's ISP and city, so treat any provider quoting a single universal latency number with caution. The useful test is your own: measure from where your players actually are.

If your community is European, the logic reverses. Hosting in Germany for a Spanish or French player base is the correct decision, and paying for Miami would make the experience worse.

VPS or managed game server

A VPS is not automatically the right answer. The honest comparison:

A managed FiveM game server gives you a panel, a preinstalled build and support that covers the game itself. You trade control for convenience. If you have never administered a Linux machine and your goal is to launch this month, this is usually the correct starting point.

A VPS gives you full root access, which means you choose the artifacts version, run your own MySQL instance, install txAdmin the way you want it, host a Discord bot alongside the server and run several FiveM instances on one machine. You also become responsible for updates, security and backups.

The practical rule: choose a VPS when you need control or when you are running more than one service. Choose a managed server when the game is the only thing you want to think about.

Running a VPS also means you should not skip the basics. Keep the system updated, restrict SSH access, and put the FiveM server behind txAdmin so you get scheduled restarts and crash recovery rather than discovering an outage from a Discord message.

A short checklist before you pay

  1. Find out the exact CPU model and its boost clock. If it is not published, ask.
  2. Count your resources, not your slots, and use that to size the RAM.
  3. Confirm the storage is NVMe.
  4. Choose the location by where your players live, not by where you live.
  5. Check that DDoS protection is included rather than sold as an upgrade after the first attack.
  6. Confirm how backups work and whether restoring one costs anything.
